INO getting its shape, atlast - Construction activity begins !!

The Steel Authority of India, the country's largest steel maker, will supply 50,000 tonne of special steels for building a CERN-like underground detector for the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO).

When the project is completed, INO will house the world's largest magnet, about four times larger than the 12,500-tonne magnet housed in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

About 50,000 tonnes of soft iron plates will be required for fabricating the neutrino detector. INO is being touted as the next frontier to take particle physics beyond the standard model which led to search for the elusive 'God particle' or the Higgs boson.

For this purpose, a two km underground tunnel is being constructed in Theni between Madurai and Kochi. The expirement is likely to cost $250 million.

The project is being executed by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in association with over two dozen institutes like Mumbai's Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) in Kolkata.

"We will source low carbon plates from SAIL for the project," Prof. Naba Mondal of TIFR and spokesperson for the INO project said.

The project will study properties of neutrinos and use magnetized iron calorimeter (ICAL) as detector.

These value added special steel plates for the INO project will be tailor-made and can command a premium of over 100 per cent in the international market. For instance, if ordinary steel plates cost Rs 40,000 per tonne, these plates can be priced at Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh per tonne, an official affiliated to the steel industry said.

Confirming this, Pankaj Gautam, CEO of SAIL's Bhilai Steel Plant said: "It is a project of national importance and we are proud to be associated with it.

We had many rounds of discussions with the BARC and TIFR team before preparing a detailed protocol. The required chemistry of the slab was finalized and 5-6 plates (about 100 tonnes) were successfully rolled on a trial basis. We hope to soon get commercial orders for these plates."

While laboratory trials for soft iron plates were carried out at Research and Development Centre for Iron & Steel (RDCIS), Ranchi, Bhilai Steel Plant took up the industrial trial.

"The experiments will involve high end technology on a scale that has not been tried out earlier in India. We will develop and transfer the knowhow for the building blocks to set up what will be the first in a series of such experiments. We hope to start work in 2017. Apart from the tunnel, it will involve setting up an underground lab complex to conduct research in particle physics," said Prof. Mondal.

^^ Since the collector office is in a congested place and in a 100 year old building and the other department HQs are in different places, plans are ON to construct a integrated collector office in 83 acres site proposed for Anna University Madurai. Estimated cost is 19 crores INR.

Thanks to Sahaayam to have done this excellent job by sending the proposal to SG.

US-based fitness chain Gold's Gym plans to open 30 fitness centres in India this fiscal at an investment of Rs 90 crore.

The company is targeting tier II and tier III cities for its expansion in the country and aims to have presence in over 20 new cities this year.

This financial year we will be opening 30 new gyms across 20 new cities in India with an investment of Rs 90 crore," Gold's Gym India Chief Operating Officer Istayak Ansari told PTI.

He said some of the cities the company is actively considering include Allahabad, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Guntur, Bhubaneshwar, Dehradun, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Jamshedpur, Madurai and Trivandrum.

On being asked how the expansion would be funded, Ansari said: "The company is currently funding its expansion through internal accruals and bank funding."

Interestingly, MADURAI has got a place in only 9 Indian cities that qualified for this Index. Happy to see that all other cities are Metros and the only tier-II Madurai is ahead of Metro Kolkatta in their index, and ranked as 4 INFLUENCER

"4 INFLUENCER" indicates Competitive in some segments, potential or imbalanced, according to the Key given.

Thanks - Sankar sir. 8-)

 and

A close-range look at the shooters at Madurai Rifle Club

Spurts of rifle cracks break the otherwise calm Race Course Road area on weekends. Closer to the action, you feel the warm air and shock waves under your feet after every shot. The instructor continuously chants orders to the practising shooters.

“Stand straight, loosen your body, and hold your weapon straight!”

With rifles crooked between shoulders and fist, shooters of all ages steady, jerk back, and hit the target, all in the blink of an eye at the serene Madurai Rifle Club (MRC).

The members of the club have broken records and created records that have remained unbroken for many years.

“The five state records created by members of the MRC remain unbroken,” says S. Velshankar, club secretary.

The three position record created by Mr. Velshankar at the State meet with 545 points remains unbroken even after six years. Similarly, the two-year-old record of Sarvesh in air rifle contests (both peep sight and open sight) remains unmatched.

G. Varsha of Velammal School started shooting four years ago after admiring her father’s shooting skills. She gathered half a dozen gold medals at the State and national competitions. The fear of board examination seldom holds her back. Now a tenth standard student, Varsha spends two to three hours coaching every Sunday.

“Once you enter, it is a different world,” she says. “The sound of shots rings music to the ears. The coach is behind you and whenever I err, he sees to it that I correct my mistake and not repeat it.”.

S. Madhumitha, a plus-one student, turned out to be a bright prospect as she reached success within a year of practice. “Continuous, concentrated and committed practice keep me going places. I never miss even a single training session,” she says.

The eighth standard student V. Ketharani has won half a dozen silver and bronze medals in State and pre-nationals. All play with a burning passion to make it on par with Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Abhinav Bhindra.

“First, shooters should learn to stand in a place. During competitions, they have to stand in a single position for almost one and a half hours. If they change their positions, their target might change and result in winning or losing,” says S. Velshankar.

He says, “In course of time, shooters would develop concentration, courage and confidence. These factors help children in their academics.” Clubs like the MRC came about thanks to G.V. Mavlankar, first Speaker of the Parliament, who brought a bill to build up a second line of civilian defence well trained in rifle shooting.

The bill enabled every State capital to have rifle clubs. In 1954, the Madras Rifle Club was inaugurated, followed by clubs in Coimbatore and Madurai in 1955 and 1956 respectively.

In Madurai, the civilians were initially trained at Civilian Rifle Training Centre in the Pasumalai Police Range before shifting to Nagamalai Range, where they were trained with government weapons.

In 1971, MRC conducted the ninth Tamil Nadu State Shooting Championship competition that won the club its own range, besides earning a reputation from K.K. Shaw, the then Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Impressed by the talents showcased at the meet, the Governor directed the then Madurai Collector, Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, to allot land for the club. Soon, the MRC got its own range amidst acres of greenery in the Race Course area.

In 1994, the club got its 50 m range with 16 lanes. S.V.K.M. Ramalingam, honourable senior coach, constructed the new range. Members next bought weapons with their own contributions to participate in trap and skeet events.

To widen its reach, the club introduced student memberships for both college and school students. Now, it has about 220 student members.

The club offers sixteen 10 m air-rifle and pistol ranges and a 50 m rifle range. It plans to install electric pulleys at the 10 m range and construct a 25 m pistol range.

MRC is conducting a State meet between August 15 and 19. Around 300 shooters from 10 units of Tamil Nadu are expected to participate. The competition will feature about 45 events under different categories. The Tamil Nadu Shooting Association is sponsoring the event. :D
